ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC), on Friday, allowed the Punjab Government to continue work on the Orange Line Metro Train project, dismissing the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) decision to halt the construction near 11 heritage sites in Lahore.

The top court has conditionally allowed the Punjab government to carry on with the 1.2 billion dollar Orange line train project in Lahore. A five-member bench, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan has formed a committee, led by a retired judge, to oversee the impacts of the project on the effected heritage sites.

The bench announced judgment eight months after reserving the verdict on an appeal by National Engineering Services Pakistan (Nespak), Lahore Development Authority, Punjab Transit Authority and the Punjab Government against the LHC August 2016 order that had suspended the construction of the project.

Following the decision, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated people on social networking site Twitter. “Alhumdulillah… Orange Line finally gets go-ahead by the Supreme Court… Today people won over the vested interests… All efforts & energies to be employed to complete this mega public welfare project as early as possible InshaAllah! Aap sab ko Mubarak.”

In April, the court had stated that it would not allow these sites to be damaged, while Nespak’s counsel had concluded his arguments after showing the court a video of the complete train route and contending no harm would come to the sites during or after construction.
