Brisbane Heat have signed Pakistan legspinner Yasir Shah as their international replacement player for the upcoming season of the Big Bash League. Having already secured the services of his countryman Shadab Khan, Heat signed a player with similar qualities considering the youngster might not be available for a few games due to international commitments.
“Having Yasir agree to join us as a replacement player means that we can plan for the series with some certainty,” head coach Daniel Vettori said on Wednesday (November 15) following the signing.
“Shadab Khan has been going from strength to strength for Pakistan since signing with us and there is the possibility he could be required for international duty during the BBL. Having an experienced ‘like for like’ player such as Yasir to call upon means we can hopefully have continuity with our playing plans.”
Even though the 31-year-old is not a part of Pakistan’s limited-overs teams, he still boasts of a good record in T20 cricket where he has an economy of 6.72 having played 73 matches.
Yasir will not be present in the 18-man squad since only two overseas players are allowed in it. With Brendon McCullum and Shadab being Heat’s first-choice overseas players, Shah will be drafted into the squad only if one of the two players needed to be replaced. Until then, the legspinner will be allowed to train with the rest of the squad.
Heat’s first game of the tournament is against Melbourne Stars on December 20 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
